Update From Aruba Regarding Hurricane Felix

The latest advisory remains tropical storm warning and hurricane watch for the ABC-islands. Above pictures shows the track according to the coordinates provided by the hurricane center, last coordinates 13.0 N 69.3 W. The hurricane travels to the north-west at a speed of 18 mph with wind gusts of 100 mph. On the scale of Saffir-Simpson Felix is considered a hurricane 2 storm. It is at a distance of about 5o miles north-east of Aruba.

Meanwhile on Aruba last night and after midnight it didn’t rain at all. Early this morning it started to rain but very little and with practically no wind, it remains completely overcast however. The beaches on Aruba have sustained no damage thus far. Later this morning hurricane Felix is forecast to travel north of Aruba. The island government still maintains the tropical storm warning for now.

I must admit that on Aruba we don’t know how to react to these kind of storm warnings. It is very rare for a hurricane to travel far down the southern Caribbean, so there are some people not doing much at this point while others are boarding up their entire houses with wood. Officials have advised people to take precautionary measures, I guess you can interpret this the way you please.

Aruba airport is closed this morning until 11 am local time, first time this happens in many years. This won’t affect travel from the US and Europe because these flights generally arrive in the afternoon. Daily departing morning American Airlines flight to Miami is affected.
