Power Outage in Aruba

Today around 5:30PM Aruba suffered a power outage. The island is completely in dark at this point (8:30 PM). Complete black outs are not common in Aruba, however this is the fourth or fifth since October last year.

As I’m writing this piece from my mobile phone, I must tell you I’m very disappointed with this situation, to say the least. This incompetence by well-paid power officials is unacceptable, in my opinion.

Even though I’m positive and upbeat I don’t think we should take these things lightly.

Update 1: about 5 hours have passed and there’s still no power in my area (Oranjestad).

Update 2: about 11:30 PM power was back in my area (after 7 hours).

Update 3: Cable TV is still out, which means that not all areas are connected as of midnight.

Update 4: officials said one of the generators caught fire, consequently losing about 25 megawatts of power, as a result it brought down the whole grid. Aruba needs about 100 megawatts.

Update 5: from what I understand most areas were connected by 3:00 AM.

Update 6: of all major hotels only Playa Linda Beach Resort could offer full service during power outage. Others only partially.

I’ve been told that about half of the island is back on. Not in my half, as of 11:30 PM there’s still no power.

Minutes after above comments we were reconnected. According to what I’ve heard and read one of the generators caught fire and brought down the whole grid.

We’ll have to get ready for a whole bunch of technical BS this weekend. It remains unacceptable. Period.
