American Airlines Cancels Flights
Today American Airlines announced that it was canceling hundreds of flights in continental US due to issues with its older MD80 aircrafts. The fleet of the world’s largest airline consists for about 45% of this aircraft type. According to some articles I’ve read American Airlines is the airline which has the oldest fleet age of all the major airlines in the world.
Last week an American Airlines Airbus A300-600 en route from Caracas to Miami made an emergency landing in Aruba due to smoke in the cabin. The aircraft landed eventually with no incidents and passengers were able to continue their journey on other aircrafts to Miami. Eventually the aircraft was flown empty to home base in Miami.
American doesn’t use this aircraft type to Aruba, so there won’t be direct impact with the cancellations. However, people who stop over in one of the hubs traveling to Aruba might have problems for sure. I suggest you call your ticket provider as soon as possible to be ahead of any problems for your Aruba vacation.
I’ve read many articles where experts state that airlines can save a lot of money by maintaining the fleet with newer, more fuel efficient, aircrafts. Strangely enough American does the opposite.
Now what?
